The king is dead

Posted in The Unbroken City by erdaron on November 26, 2011

“The king is dead,” said the messenger. The words laid heavily among the soldiers, but they all expected the death and so no one was surprised. They gave the messenger a brief look and then turned their gaze back toward the enemy across the field. Someone handed the messenger a shield and a sword. He accepted without a word.

The Captain surveyed the line of monsters. They knew of the king’s death. Their standards were rising; their horns were howling. He drew his sword, squinted, and scowled.

“He won’t be the only one,” and stepped forward.
